The Paste Into command (Edit>Paste Into) has been around for a while in InDesign and is becoming increasingly useful as a tool for creating overlays in Adobe Digital Publishing Suite apps. If you haven’t yet seen how this command can be used to facilitate the creation of scrollable frames, pan-and-zoom objects, and multi-state objects (i.e., slideshows), then this tip is going to make your life a whole lot easier!
Creating scrollable frames used to be a complicated process that involved creating separate frames with identical names in different parts of the InDesign document. There was also no way to control the content’s originating position in the scrollable frame. Creating pan-and-zoom objects used to require a bit of finagling to mask the large picture object with the frame. Let us show you how easy it is to create a scrollable frame and a pan-and-zoom object with the Paste Into command.
Create a Scrollable Frame
- Create an empty placeholder frame where you want the scrollable frame to be.
- Create a content frame with the scrollable content. This can be simple text or a combination of objects grouped together in the content frame.
- Select the content frame and Edit>Cut, then select the empty placeholder (scrollable) frame and use the Paste Into command to insert your content.
- In the Overlays panel, you can now specify which way you want the content to scroll and where you want the content to originate.
Create a Pan-and-Zoom Object
- Create an empty placeholder frame the size you want the pan-and-zoom area to be.
- Place your large image in the InDesign document, then select it and select Edit>Cut.
- Select the empty placeholder frame and use the Paste Into command to insert the large pan-and-zoom picture.
