SXSW Interactive, HTML5, Monetizing Apps, a New 8GB Nook Tablet, and David Remnick Talks Technology vs. Print
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week we’re discussing a digital-publishing-oriented panel at SXSW Interactive, publishers’ attitudes toward HTML5, ways to monetize apps, the new 8GB Nook Tablet, and more.
- When you think of Austin’s annual SXSW festival, its technology-focused SXSW Interactive track might not be what first comes to mind, but this year it shouldn’t be missed. One panel that looks especially interesting is Digital vs. Print: Storyboard to Digital Delivery, announced this week. Panelists include Chris Wilkes, VP of the Hearst App Lab; Joe Simon, CTO at Condé Nast; and Liz Schimel, EVP and chief digital officer at Meredith. The session will provide an insider’s view of the process behind creating and delivering digital magazines. SXSW Interactive takes place in Austin, Texas, from March 9-13, but if you can’t attend in person, keep up by following the hashtag #SXSW on Twitter.
- As the focus on web content that’s smartphone- and tablet-friendly ramps up, HTML5 is being identified as the most viable solution. The attitude toward HTML5 among publishers varies; Hearst has committed to transitioning all of its magazine titles to HTML5 by the end of 2012, while Rodale and Atlantic Media are taking a more cautious approach and are still considering making the switch.
- As the tablet market grows, and the demand for digital editions grows with it, publishers are faced with the question of how to generate a financial return from their apps. While the obvious route to monetizing is display advertising, there are other avenues to consider as well. Rob O’Regan sheds some light on the other methods of app monetization on his blog.
- On Tuesday, Barnes & Noble officially announced the introduction of a new, 8GB Nook Tablet that matches the Kindle Fire’s $200 price tag.
- New Yorker Editor David Remnick sat down for a great interview about emerging technology vs. good old-fashioned print in the publishing industry. Watch the full interview on AllThingsD.
