MPA Digital: Swipe, Adobe DPS Release 19, The Daily Optimizes for the New iPad, 2012 National Magazine Awards for Digital Media, and SXSW Interactive

Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week we’re discussing MPA Digital: Swipe, some highlights from Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Release 19, optimizing apps for the new iPad, the 2012 National Magazine Awards for Digital Media, and more.

  • Technology for Publishing participated in this week’s MPA Digital: Swipe in NYC. The conference opened with a great introduction by Nina Link, MPA’s president and CEO, and a pertinent keynote on the digital landscape from Paul Verna, a senior analyst at eMarketer. Verna’s key takeaways:
    • Think of tablets as a new medium–it’s not print, it’s not web, it’s not mobile.
    • Develop for all platforms, but if you must choose, iOS comes first, Android second.
    • Your readers will migrate to tablets. Follow them.
    • Digital monetization is challenging, but opportunities will increase as device adoption grows and audiences scale.
    • Tablets will continue to get better, faster, and cheaper. Print won’t.
  • In advance of last week’s release of Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Release 19, TFP got a preview of its across-the-board enhancements as the product continues to evolve rapidly in response to user demands. Take a look at the highlights of what you can expect to see, in our blog post DPS Release 19: Expanded Features in Adobe’s Biggest Release Yet.
  • How are publishers being affected by the new iPad? Folio explored this topic in its interview with Greg Clayman, publisher of The Daily, about how his team prepared and optimized their app for the updated Retina display.
  • The American Society of Magazine Editors presented the 2012 National Magazine Awards for Digital Media, the Digital Ellies, this past Tuesday. Winners included National Geographic, for best tablet edition, and Men’s Health, in the Personal Service category. Read a full recap of the 2012 Ellies winners on the TFP blog.
  • Didn’t make it to SXSW Interactive? Check out this short video, in which Next Issue Media chats with Liz Schimel of Meredith and Chris Wilkes of Hearst after their panel, Digital vs. Print: Storyboard to Digital Delivery.
