Technology for Publishing has been advising and guiding the digital publishing efforts at National Geographic since the iPad was first released in early 2009. Beginning with two standalone apps—50 Greatest Photographs, and 50 Places of a Lifetime—the National Geographic publications have expanded to include monthly issues of National Geographic magazine, National Geographic Traveler, National Geographic Kids, and several special issues, including “7 Billion” and “A Taste of Montreal,” with more than 50 apps and issues produced to date.
Through all of these efforts, TFP has worked closely with Adobe to collaborate on feature enhancements and existing constraints, and establish successful workflows that combine the best of the Adobe DPS tool set with publishing teams’ content requirements. These best practices have been utilized across all of TFP’s client implementations of DPS as we continue to push the envelope and refine what’s possible.
This highly collaborative effort has allowed National Geographic to create some of the best apps available, offering excellent examples of what can be done interactively in the market. National Geographic magazine is currently among the top five downloaded digital publishing apps.
Recently, Adobe visited National Geographic’s headquarters to interview the digital teams and document their progress on video in order to share that experience with the Adobe community.
Check out Adobe’s summary on the visit and its interview with National Geographic EVP and President of Publishing and Digital Media Declan Moore.
