Thinking Digital First, Magazine Market Strength, Atlantic Media’s Quartz, Publishers’ Settlement With Google, A TFP InDesign Performance Tip
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing digital-first publishing strategies, the state of the magazine market, publishers’ settlement with Google, and more.
- On GigaOM this week, Mathew Ingram argues that embracing a “digital first” strategy isn’t just an option for publishers—it’s necessary for their survival.
- According to the MPA, new data points to a strong magazine market, when digital editions are factored in along with print. Figures show a 57% increase in the number of brands advertising in tablet, online, and print magazines since 2010, as well as 4% growth in the combined tablet and print audience in the past year.
- According to Digiday, Atlantic Media’s new business-focused, “digitally native” publication is getting positive reviews among digital designers. In addition to its use of responsive design, Quartz has broken the mold by doing away with a home page, and having stories appear in a continuous scroll.
- Under a settlement reached last week between book publishers and Google, publishers can choose whether they will let Google digitize their out-of-print books that are still under copyright. Those that do will share in revenue from Google’s sale of the e-books, and receive digitized copies for their own use.
- If InDesign is crashing or not performing well, you might have a damaged preference file. Learn how to troubleshoot the problem in our recently launched InDesign Tips section on the TFP blog. And while you’re there, check out some of our other helpful tips, such as how to optimize your work environment by creating keyboard shortcuts.
