At Apple’s much-anticipated press event today, the company made the announcement that everyone has been waiting for: Apple has developed a new device called the iPad Mini. Here’s a brief recap of some of key facts related to this new member of the iPad family:
- It’s 7.2 mm thick—as thin as a pencil—and weighs just 0.68 lb.—the same weight as a pad of paper.
- The iPad Mini has a 7.9-in. screen. Both the Mini and the iPad, with its 9.7-in. screen, have a 1024×768 resolution, so all apps designed for the regular-size iPad will work on the Mini as well.
- The Mini features a dual-core A5 chip.
- It has a FaceTime HD front-side camera, and a 5-megapixel iSight camera on the back.
- It offers LTE capabilities, as well as 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.
- It uses the new Lightning connector, that was announced for the latest generation of the iPhone and iPod.
- It promises 10 hours of battery life.
- The Mini will be available for pre-order Oct. 26, with the Wi-Fi-only version starting to ship on Nov. 2. The Wi-Fi+cellular version will start shipping two weeks later.
- Pricing starts at $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi version and goes up from there for the 32GB and 64GB versions. (See the screen image from Phil Schiller’s presentation below for details.)
