Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing some recent advertising stats, a name change for the Audit Bureau of Circulations, Adobe’s latest DPS update, and more.
- In what TechCrunch described as “an advertising aggregation play,” cloud-based communications company J2 Global acquired tech publisher Ziff Davis for $167 million. Ziff was a tech media leader in the ’90s, with titles like PC Magazine and eWeek, but has since struggled.
- There are some notable advertising stats this week for publishers. The OPA found that advertisers prefer content publishers over social media for brand-focused ad campaigns by a 3-to-1 margin. Meanwhile, another study found that Google earns more from ads than all U.S. print publications combined.
- Speaking of digital ads, Forbes‘ Lewis DVorkin has some advice for journalists who are having trouble adapting to their changing industry: It’s time to acknowledge the upside—and inevitability—of emerging trends like content marketing and native advertising.
- Yesterday, the Audit Bureau of Circulations made an announcement aimed at demonstrating its ability to adapt: It’s rebranding itself as the Alliance for Audited Media. In addition, TheMediaBriefing is reporting that the ABC will likely “launch a combined print circulation and online readership measurement report early next year” with PwC.
- Earlier this week, Adobe reviewed the latest release of Adobe Digital Publishing Suite—Version 24—which brings with it a number of stability and feature enhancements. TFP’s Margot Knorr Mancini provides an overview of the DPS update—the last one for 2012—on the TFP blog.
- This week on TFP’s DPS Tips blog, read about how Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite Analytics Service can help publishers of DPS apps gain insight into readers’ engagement with editorial and advertising content. And check out a time-saving tip for remote users of the vjoon K4™ workflow management system.
