Simplifying Digital Design, The Best Print Apps of 2012, Advice for Digital Journalists, Publishers’ Tricks for Boosting Traffic, TFP’s Q&A With EIC Maria Streshinsky, TFP’s InDesign and DPS Tips
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing digital publication design, the best apps for the iPad, tricks for getting clicks, and more.
- Craig Mod, formerly of Flipboard, makes a case for simplicity when it comes to designing digital publications. Read Mod’s blog post to see his steps for implementing a strategy that encompasses small issues, small file sizes, a fluid publishing schedule, and clear navigation.
- McPheters’ iMonitor has released its list of the best consumer publication and news-related apps for the iPad. TFP Founder and CEO Margot Knorr Mancini offers her take on what is required to produce a successful digital publication app today.
- The Tow Center for Digital Journalism also released a report this week focused on “new opportunities to do good journalism in new ways” in an industry where “advertiser support, the key source of subsidy for American journalism since the 1830s, is evaporating.”
- A Digiday story highlighted some of the tried-and-true gimmicks publishers use to boost site traffic to bump up ad rates but argues that these are short-sighted tricks that ultimately damage publishers’ credibility. (How many of them are you guilty of?)
- Earlier this week, TFP’s Margot Knorr Mancini spoke with Maria Streshinsky, Editor in Chief of Pacific Standard magazine, and her thoughts about women’s role in media. Check out TFP’s Women in Media blog to read the Q&A and other news highlighting successful industry leaders.
- On the TFP InDesign Tips blog, learn more about custom style mapping, a new feature in CS6 that allows for the mapping of Character and Paragraph styles within linked text objects. And on the TFP DPS Tips blog, we explain how to add social sharing features to your DPS app.
