The Demise of The Daily, The Argument Against Interactivity, The Launch of Glossi, vjoon K4™ Enhancements, TFP’s Latest InDesign and DPS Tips
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing News Corp.’s shutdown of The Daily, what consumers really want from digital publications, a new digital publishing tool, and more.
- News Corp. has announced the end of the first iPad-only news publication, The Daily. Despite having 100,000 paying subscribers, the endeavor was expensive and, according to some analysts, lacked a sustainable business model as well as compelling content.
- At Mashable‘s recent Media Summit, Hearst President David Carey noted that “the [magazine] industry overshot the interactivity early on” in developing digital editions. He asserted that “most people just want the product itself” without all the bells and whistles. Do you agree?
- As some publishers debate whether there’s a benefit to creating “native apps” for platforms like the iPad, social commerce company ThisNext announced the public beta of Glossi, a free digital publishing platform. Magazines produced with the tool will resemble their print counterparts but will be published on the Glossi website.
- Read our overview of the upcoming features you can expect to see in vjoon K4™ version 6.5, which is slated for release the first week of January. Among them are the addition of a Renditions publication setting and the return of K4 Revision Manager™.
- Check out the TFP InDesign Tips blog to find out how to use Story View to display overset text in tables. And on the TFP DPS Tips blog, we discuss how iPad app developers can back up their Apple Developer keys.
