Five Digital Revenue Opportunities, Meredith’s Foray Into E-commerce, TFP’s Women in Media Q&A With Amy Klee, NY Times’ Latest Digital Announcements, Responsive Design in 2013, TFP InDesign Tip: Key Objects, TFP’s DPS Webinar Series
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing Better Homes and Gardens‘ e-commerce effort, responsive design vs. apps, the Times‘ new e-book partnerships, and more.
- EMedia Vitals Editor Rob O’Regan reviews five digital revenue opportunities that have generated a lot of buzz in 2012 and are on track to continue to do so in 2013: native advertising, tablet subscriptions, paywalls, e-commerce, and marketing services.
- Speaking of e-commerce, Meredith is hoping that Better Homes and Gardens’ new online shopping channel will serve as an incremental revenue stream. Its model mirrors that of Conde Nast’s Lucky, which in August launched a similar shopping site. A current drawback for both: Shoppers have to leave the publications’ sites to complete their transactions.
- This week on TFP’s Women in Media blog, we spoke with Amy Klee, Design Director of America’s Test Kitchen, home of the revered publications and TV shows Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country. She discussed the scope of her work in an organization that has been expanding its media reach and offers some great advice for those looking to enter the field.
- The New York Times made headlines this past week, announcing its first e-book publishing partnerships, the release of a more responsive version of its Android app, and the release of a potentially ground-breaking multimedia feature series called Snow Fall.
- Mashable has declared 2013 the year of responsive web design, suggesting that it can reach a wider audience with that approach than it could by offering apps for specific mobile platforms. Business Insider agrees and is offering a report that explains why it’s so bullish about HTML5. But according to a post on Lean Back 2.0, publishers like Glamour see a benefit to both approaches. So, which side are you on?
- Visit TFP’s InDesign Tips blog, where you can learn more about a new CS6 feature called key objects that can help you align objects on a page more easily.
- And if you haven’t done so already, check out TFP’s latest offering—a series of webinars that will teach you how to use Adobe DPS to publish your own magazine app. Register soon for the free introductory training session.
This Week in Publishing will be on hiatus next week, but look for our compilation of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world again on Friday, Jan. 4, here on the TFP blog. In the meantime, happy holidays to you all, and best wishes for a joyful and prosperous 2013!
