As part of a reorganization that includes a shift from a daily to a weekly print edition, a site redesign, and the removal of its online paywall, entertainment news publication Variety has named two women to Editor in Chief roles, for the first time in its history.

VarietyClaudia Eller, who will oversee Variety‘s film coverage, is a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Times, where she most recently served as Entertainment News Editor. Prior to joining the LA Times, she was a film reporter at Variety and held positions at the Hollywood Reporter and On Location magazine.

Cynthia Littleton, who will oversee Variety‘s coverage of TV, is being promoted from Deputy Editor. She was Editor of the Hollywood Reporter before joining Variety in 2007. She previously held roles at United Press International, Broadcasting & Cable magazine, and Variety. Littleton is also author of the book TV on Strike: Why Hollywood Went to War Over the Internet, which was released last month.

According to Mediabistro.com, Jay Penske, who purchased Variety last fall, “is continuing a pattern of promoting female staffers to heretofore male-dominated editorial roles” that began with the promotion of Michelle Sobrina-Stearns to the Publisher role last October.
