In the past few weeks, there’s been another significant wave of stories and announcements accentuating how high-profile women are making their mark in the media and publishing industries. Here are some highlights:
- MediaBistro recently spoke with Kara Swisher, Co-Executive Editor of AllThingsD.com, who talked about what it takes to be an influential journalist, how she helped found the website, and why there aren’t more women in high tech.
- Mother Jones examined the nominees for National Magazine Awards and discovered a welcome shift this time around: Half of the finalists in the writing categories are women.
- In an appearance on Bloomberg TV’s Market Makers earlier this month, Daily Beast Editor in Chief Tina Brown offered her take on whether women can really have it all, and the state of the news media industry. Watch an excerpt of that interview online.
- A survey of 2,000 North American women by Weber Shandwick and KRC Research found that women spend an average of 12 hours each week using social media. See their Digital Women Influence Study infographic for additional findings about women’s social media habits.
- Do men and women have different tastes in mobile apps? Wired reporter Christina Bonnington looked at a breakdown of who uses which apps to try to find out.
- Joanna Coles, Editor in Chief of Cosmopolitan, received an award at the New York Women in Communications’ Matrix Awards luncheon, which recognizes women for outstanding achievement in media and communications.
- Molly Ball, a reporter for The Atlantic, was awarded the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting by Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications for her coverage the 2012 presidential election.
- In recent hiring news, Melissa Post has been named Executive Fashion Director, Advertising, at Cosmopolitan; Condé Nast Entertainment has hired Whitney Hill as Senior Vice President of Business Development and Strategy; and Laura Rowley is leaving the Huffington Post to become Meredith’s VP of Video Production and Product.
