Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing Zinio’s new Netflix-like subscription model, Esquire‘s digital-only weekly, Elle‘s Google Glass app, and more.
- Digital magazine pioneer Zinio has announced the availability of a Netflix-like subscription model. For $5 a month, subscribers to the new Z-Pass service can access any three magazines from a selection of more than 300.
- With the news this week that Yahoo is acquiring Tumblr, you might be wondering whether you should be paying more attention to the blog service. To help you decide, Poynter has provided an article explaining how some publishers are already using Tumblr to extend their brands.
- Aiming to diversify its revenue stream, Rodale—publisher of health and wellness titles such as Men’s Health, Prevention, and Runner’s World—this week launched a standalone e-commerce site, Rodales.com. The shop offers “eco-luxury” products, including clothing, accessories, and housewares.
- Esquire has launched a weekly digital-only edition. Esquire Weekly is free for subscribers to the magazine’s monthly tablet edition, and 99 cents for non-subscribers. Each issue will include seven columns on topics such as politics, advice, food, and culture, as well as content from Esquire.com.
- Elle has become the first magazine to launch an app for Glass, Google’s new wearable computer. Elle Glassware will offer horoscopes, content from the Elle Dispatch and Street Chic blogs, and photo Lookbooks. Users can share articles and photos and create reading lists and shopping wish lists.
- In TFP’s May Pinterest Roundup, you’ll find links to the latest Pinterest-related news, including the top magazines on Pinterest, the (welcome) return of some design features, how to use Pinterest to boost your marketing and SEO efforts, and more.
- On TFP’s Women in Media blog, Taste of Home Editor in Chief Catherine Cassidy explains how the magazine has leveraged social media and digital technologies to strengthen the sense of community that its print product has cultivated.
- The Folio Builder panel is key when you’re creating content for an Adobe DPS app in InDesign. The Folio Builder panel menu changes depending on which view—Folio, Article, or Layout View—is active. Visit TFP’s DPS Tips blog to learn how each view affects which menu options are available.
