Meeker’s Internet Trends Report, GfK MRI’s Stats on the Magazine Market, The New Air & Space iPad App, Newsweek Up for Sale, Women in Media: Hiring News, TFP InDesign Tip: Reuse and Share InDesign Presets
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing the latest data on Internet trends and magazine readership, the Smithsonian’s new Air & Space iPad edition, and more.
- At the D11 conference last week, Mary Meeker, a General Partner in the digital practice at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, released her latest Internet Trends report. Visit All Things D’s website to view her slide deck, which includes data on tablet and smartphone vendors and their market share, and monetization opportunities for the media industry.
- According to GfK MRI’s latest Survey of the American Consumer, digital magazine readership increased a whopping 83% over the past year—but digital still only represents 1.4% of magazine readership overall. Figures were mixed for print, with some magazines’ audience gains balanced out by others’ losses.
- The Smithsonian Institution has released a new version of its Air & Space magazine app for the iPad. According to the Talking New Media blog, the native tablet edition now takes advantage of the landscape orientation to better showcase the magazine’s photography.
- Newsweek is up for sale less than six months after it ceased print publication and went digital-only. According to a memo, owner IAC/InterActive Corp intends to focus its full attention on The Daily Beast, which it also owns. Some stats compiled by Journalism.org clearly illustrate the publication’s decline.
- Recent hiring news highlights women’s roles in the evolving media landscape. Check out our roundup of some of the latest announcements, including Nancy Perry Graham’s new role at AARP and Susan Glasser’s move to Politico, on TFP’s Women in Media blog.
- You probably know that there are a lot of customization options in InDesign, but did you know that these customized settings can be easily copied and pasted from one version of InDesign to another, or copied to another user’s workstation? Visit TFP’s InDesign Tips blog to learn how.
