Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing tablets’ increasing market penetration, how tablets’ growth is affecting digital magazine publishers, tips for publishing DPS apps, and more.
- A Pew Internet & American Life Project survey has found that 34% of U.S. adults now own tablet devices—almost double last year’s figure.
- On the MediaShift blog, Gabriel Kahn takes a look at how tablet adoption has affected magazine publishing and what’s on the horizon. The bad news: Publishers are faced with investing a lot of money to support an ever-increasing variety of devices, resulting in a constant game of catch-up that’s unlikely to end anytime soon.
- The good news is that on the iPad, at least, magazine publishers are selling more ads than ever before. A Publishers Information Bureau survey of 58 magazines found that from Jan. 1 to March 31, publishers sold 23.6% more ad units on their iPad apps than they had during the same period last year.
- App developers welcomed Apple’s announcement this week that apps can now be transferred from one developer to another within iTunes Connect. Now, the app will retain its original name and user reviews with the transfer, and existing customers will continue receiving automatic updates.
- Learning how to publish an Adobe DPS app can feel challenging to new app creators. That’s why we’re offering seven of our most popular tips and best practices to help you get started, and announcing the availability of our new DPSPublish™ series of handbooks, and an app that will take you from novice to expert.
