The Financial Outlook for Digital News, Digital Natives’ Print-Format Preference, Responsive Web vs. Apps, Bad News From Barnes & Noble, The Rapidly Evolving Tablet Market, InDesign Tip: Hide Panels and Toolbars Quickly
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing the latest surveys on digital media trends, the responsive web vs. app debate, an overview of the tablet market, and more.
- According to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report, the number of people paying for digital news more doubled over the past year. But unfortunately, only 14% of survey respondents who were not already doing so said that they were likely to pay for digital news in the future.
- A new survey of “digital natives” by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has revealed a perhaps unexpected trend among 16- to-29-year-olds: They generally prefer reading print rather than digital publications. You can see the full report on Pew’s website.
- In the past week, two articles—one from MediaPost, and the other from Adweek—examined the responsive web vs. app debate. The upshot: There’s a role for both approaches when it comes to publishers’ mobile content strategies.
- Analysts who were not expecting good news from Barnes & Noble during its earnings call this week were on target. The retailer announced a net loss of $154.8 million and a 16.8% drop in Nook revenues for the fiscal year that ended in April. It will also no longer manufacture the Nook tablet hardware itself.
- We know that the tablet market is steadily moving upward in sales and adoption, but where does it really stand? We scoured the most recent research and studies to pull together a recap of tablet trends and stats on the TFP blog to give you a better idea.
- Visit TFP’s InDesign Tips blog to learn a few simple but effective shortcuts to help declutter your screen by closing out the open panels and toolbars you’re not using.
