Quartz’s New Annotations Feature, Digital and Print Reading Habits, The AAM’s Latest Snapshot Report, The NYT’s Site Outage, Women in Media News Roundup, InDesign CC Tip: New Document Dialog Preview Function, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week: Social Media Dimensions Blueprint
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at a new commenting feature for Quartz, research from Condé Nast, the New York Times’ site outage, and more.
- Atlantic Media’s digital business publication Quartz just launched a feature called Annotations that allows readers to comment right next to individual paragraphs in articles—something that Anne-Marie Concepción, an interviewee for TFP’s Women in Media blog, recently pointed to as the next big shift in media.
- Condé Nast research has found that print and digital readers have some surprisingly similar consumption habits. In the survey of 6,965 subscribers, the amount of time readers spent on articles and ads, and how they navigated through an issue, were similar across Condé’s major titles, whether the format was print or digital.
- According to the Alliance for Audited Media’s Snapshot report on the first six months of 2013, single-copy magazine sales were down 10% compared with the same period last year, but paid subscriptions decreased just 0.1%. Digital editions account for only 3.3% of total circulation, but that’s nearly double last year’s figure.
- On Wednesday The New York Times experienced an unprecedented two-hour site outage, during which the newspaper turned to social media outlets like Facebook to share news. Guardian columnist Dan Gillmor has his own suggestions on how the Times—and other publications—could better prepare for such situations.
- There’s been a handful of media industry hiring announcements in the past couple of weeks, as well as two interesting profiles of female leaders in publishing. Visit TFP’s Women in Media blog for our roundup of the latest news highlighting women’s roles in the evolving media landscape.
- This week on TFP’s InDesign Tips blog, learn about an InDesign CC feature that lets you preview documents as you select options and settings in the New Document dialog.
- Visit the TFP blog for our infographic pick of the week every Wednesday. This week: A detailed guide to the design dimensions of the components of social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram.
