Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at a potential postal rate increase, another outage for The New York Times website, tips on developing your content strategy, and more.
- The U.S. Postal Service could raise mailing rates by as much as 10% through a board vote set to take place Sept. 5. The Association of Magazine Media is campaigning against the increase, arguing that it will have a major impact on the USPS’s largest customers, resulting in decreased mailing volumes and lower revenues.
- Tech news site AllThingsD is looking for potential investors, as it gets closer to a decision about whether it will extend its contract with News Corp. subsidiary Dow Jones past its Dec. 31 expiration. The Washington Post Co., Bloomberg, and Condé Nast are among those rumored to be interested in buying a stake in the site.
- Publishers, take note: According to research from comScore, mobile commerce now accounts for 10% of all e-commerce spending. A Folio magazine article suggests that publishers who are “looking to expand their ancillary revenue streams” should look to m-commerce ASAP.
- On Tuesday, The New York Times’ website was taken offline for the second time this month, when it was hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army. Twitter was also affected.
