Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at Apple’s upcoming press event, Amazon’s new print/ebook bundles, and more.
- Yesterday, the U.S. Postal Service’s Board of Governors decided to postpone a decision on enacting an emergency across-the-board rate increase that magazine mailers have been lobbying against. The issue will be taken up again at their next meeting, Sept. 24-25.
- Apple sent out invitations to a press event that’s being held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Eastern. According to Business Insider, the company is expected to announce a version of the iPhone 5 with hardware improvements, as well as a less expensive model with a plastic body.
- It’s rumored that Apple will also officially release iOS 7 at next week’s event. TabTimes has some predictions and advice to help publishers get ready, and this iOS 7 design cheat sheet for key specs is handy resource for app designers and developers. Keep an eye out for the possible release of the OS X Mavericks desktop operating system, too.
- Customers who have purchased print books from Amazon can now download Kindle editions of the titles at a discounted price of $2.99 or less through its new MatchBook program. So far, HarperCollins and Amazon Publishing are participating, and authors and publishers using Kindle Direct Publishing can choose to enroll.
- Prepping for its spinoff from Time Warner in early 2014, Time Inc. announced that it will be launching a new subscription pricing model, starting with People magazine. It also rolled out a new ad product, Time Engage, that will use third-party data on Time Inc.’s print, web and mobile readers to better target print and digital ads.
- If you’re one of the lucky people who owns a Retina display, you’ll be happy to learn that InDesign CC supports Retina devices and monitors. Visit TFP’s InDesign Tips blog to learn more and see other helpful tips.
- Every Wednesday, we post our Infographic Pick of the Week. This week on the TFP blog, you’ll find an infographic that draws on data gleaned from Twitter, YouTube, and Google search to compare eight tablet models.
