Update on the Adobe Hack, The Journalist as a Brand, The Value of ‘Exposure,’ Time Inc. on Flipboard, Editorial Awards Season, Women in Media: Hiring News, TFP DPS Tip: Unpublishing or Deleting a Folio, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week: Who’s on Flipboard
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at the scope of the Adobe server hack, what it means to be a digital journalist today, media awards, and more.
- It turns out that the extent of the server breach Adobe disclosed last month was worse than first thought. Photoshop can be added to the list of applications whose source code was stolen, and the number of customer accounts compromised has been revised upward—from 3 million to 38 million.
- 10,000 Words recently examined whether digital journalists’ salaries should be based on metrics like page views and unique visitors, or whether unquantifiable assets like personal brand and credibility are more valuable. A blog post by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers on the importance of self-branding for journalists makes a case for the latter.
- Meanwhile, on the eMedia Vitals blog, Rob O’Regan weighed in on a debate over whether contributing writers should be paid at all. The conversation was spawned by the opinion piece “Slaves of the Internet, Unite!” by Tim Kreider in last Sunday’s New York Times, in which he lamented frequent requests to write content in exchange for “exposure” rather than payment.
- This week, Time Inc. is making content from its People and InStyle magazines available on Flipboard, with Time and Fortune expected to be added in December. According to Adweek, Time Inc. plans to sell ads against its content in the mobile news-reading app, and attract consumers by promoting its apps and subscriptions through house ads.
- Editor & Publisher announced the winners of its 2013 Eppy Awards, which recognize the best media-affiliated websites this week, with CNET News taking the top honor in the best large news website category. Meanwhile, you can see who made visit Min‘s website to see the list of finalists for its 2013 Editorial & Design Awards honoring print and digital magazines.
- Every Wednesday, we post our Infographic Pick of the Week. This week, learn about who’s using Flipboard, as well as the app’s top publishers and brands.
- There have been many promotions and new hires in media this fall. Visit our Women in Media blog for the latest roundup of hiring news highlighting women’s roles in the evolving media landscape at organizations like Condé Nast, Twitter, Poynter, Meredith, Atlantic Media, National Journal, and more.
- Check out TFP’s DPS Tips blog to find out more about the process of unpublishing or deleting a folio created with Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite.
