Publishers as Retailers, Management Shakeups at Two Publishers, Amazon’s Push for E-book Dominance, November’s Media Metrics Roundup, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week, TFP DPS Tip: Exploring the Power of Analytics
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at publishers opening online storefronts, reorgs at Time Inc. and Say Media, the latest media industry stats, and more.
- The trend of publications like Allure and Domino looking to retail sales for additional revenue continues, with online shopping initiatives launched by Dwell and The Wall Street Journal. Retail Development Manager Zachary Martz said that reporters aren’t involved in curating items for The Shops at WSJ but noted that “we’re still exploring the line between editorial and content.”
- That issue of the “separation of church and state” was also raised following the news that a reorg at Time Inc. has eliminated the EIC role, which had been held by Martha Nelson. Instead, former EIC Norman Pearlstine is back, in the new role of Chief Content Officer. Editors are now reporting to the business side, prompting some in the industry to question the organization’s editorial independence.
- Say Media had its own organizational shakeup this week, announcing the departure of four top executives. The publisher of ReadWrite, xoJane, and other sites eliminated the management positions after deciding to nix its plans to go public and focus instead on a “sustained profitability goal.”
- Amazon’s push to dominate the e-book and e-reader markets continues. Its new Kindle First program lets Amazon Prime members download one pre-release ebook for free each month, and its Amazon Source program will give independent bookstores a commission for selling Kindles and e-books—an offer many of them see as a threat rather than an opportunity.
- See our new monthly Media Metrics roundup to help you keep up with current media industry trends and prepare for changes that are just around the corner. This month, we’re sharing the latest stats on social media, reading habits, advertising, tablet use, print publishing, and much more.
- Every Wednesday, we post our Infographic Pick of the Week. This week’s selection explores how readers interact with content and ads on websites.
