The New York Times Adds a Video Feature, Google Swaps Currents for Newsstand, Examining the Digital Skills Gap, Programmatic Ad-Buying Explained, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week, TFP DPS Tip: Publishing Folios
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at new products from The New York Times and Google, the buzz around programmatic ad buying, and more.
- The New York Times has launched a video-based news feature called The New York Times Minute. Videos are published three times a day, at 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. “Video is a fast growing and important part of our news report [and] is a natural extension of our journalism,” noted Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson.
- Google has merged its Currents app with its Google Play magazine store to create an Android shop called Google Play Newsstand for magazines, newspapers, and blog content. According to The Verge, “Google’s take on the newsreader includes both paid subscriptions and Flipboard-like newsreader content.” Google is working on an iOS version as well.
- “Do magazine publishers have a digital skills gap?” Peter Houston asks on his Flipping Pages blog. Pointing to a recent report on the state of digital marketing talent, he proposes that the same issues around education and training identified in that study apply to magazine publishing as well. Take a look and see if you agree.
- “Programmatic is changing the game for publishers,” AdAge declared in an article about how Condé Nast, Hearst, and The New York Times are embracing programmatic ad buying, and the trend’s repercussions. If you’re still having trouble understanding the concept, check out ClickZ’s post “Dissecting Buzzwords: What Does Programmatic Mean to You?“
- As luck would have it, our Infographic Pick of the Week offers a primer on how programmatic ad buying works.
- Check out TFP’s DPS Tips blog for our latest advice on using Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite. This week’s post provides a quick review of the process for publishing a folio.
- Are you getting ready for the holidays? So are we!
