Layoffs at MSLO, 2013’s News Highlights According to Twitter and Pocket, A Branding Strategy for Santa, Media Metrics: Industry Stats and Trends, TFP DPS Tip: Single Edition Apps, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at the top articles of 2013, a tongue-in-cheek brand refresh strategy for Santa, TFP’s latest Media Metrics roundup, and more.
- Yesterday, the New York Post reported that about 100 employees, or 20% of the staff, at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia were let go, including several high-level execs. The layoffs follow a year of financial struggles, and the appointment of Daniel Dienst as CEO just over a month ago.
- Twitter has released its 2013 Year on Twitter roundup, highlighting “the year’s biggest Twitter moments” and top global news events based on activity on the social media site. An interactive tool lets you take a look at the biggest-trending stories by category and by month. Take a look — you might find some tips for social media success as well as some cautionary tales among the results.
- Pocket has posted its own “Best of 2013” lists based on the content users of the “read it later” app saved most often in 2013. YouTube, Lifehacker and The New York Times topped the list of publishers whose content was saved most often. Ironically, the year’s most-saved article was The Guardian‘s “News Is Bad for You – and Giving Up Reading It Will Make You Happier.”
- Speaking of irony, U.K. communications firm Quietroom has created a *Santa*™©®Corp. Inc Brand Book “Brand Refresh” guide that includes such marketing gems as “A brand is a sack on a sleigh of belief” and *Santa*’s approved Pantone shades. Whether you’re on the marketing or content side of the media biz, we promise you’ll get a kick out of it.
