The Media in 2013, What’s in Store for 2014, Dangerous Times for Journalists, Adobe’s DPS v29 Update, Women in Media: Career Roundup, TFP DPS Tip: Creating Interactive Pull Tabs, TFP’s December Pinterest Roundup, Our Infographic Pick of the Week
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at what’s in store for 2014; Adobe’s latest DPS update; our final Pinterest, Women in Media, and infographic posts of 2013; and more.
- It’s that time of year when industry analysts take a look back at the year that was. Two selections worth a read: Rob O’Regan’s “Print and 2 other things that did not die this year,” and Poynter’s “best and worst media errors and corrections in 2013“—and take heed, so you don’t find yourself on next year’s list!
- ‘Tis the season to speculate about the year ahead, too. Nieman Journalism Labs’ “Predictions for Journalism 2014” series includes essays from more than two-dozen media pros. And Digiday’s “5 Hopeful Signs For Publishing From 2013” offers up some reasons for optimism in the new year.
- There are some sobering stats for 2013 as well: As of Dec. 1, 211 journalists were in jails worldwide, according to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists; that’s a decrease from last year’s record of 232. According to Reporters Without Borders, 71 journalists were killed and 87 were kidnapped this year while on the job.
- Adobe released the first round of a v29 update for its Digital Publishing Suite software, with a second batch planned for Jan. 11. Phase 1 includes changes to the iOS app welcome screen, new Web Viewer and Social Sharing features, DPS App Builder enhancements, and more. Stay tuned for an update from TFP when the next round of changes is released.
- See our final Women in Media post of 2013 for hiring news from Meredith, Time Inc., and other top publishers, as well as coverage of h0w women were portrayed in the media this year, and the latest Pew survey on gender and work.
- Check out this week’s DPS Tip to learn how to use the Interactive Scrollable Frames feature to create a pull tab that lets users reveal hidden content in a tablet layout.
- Our December Pinterest Roundup includes stories on new features and ways to use the social media site to your advantage. And don’t forget to visit TFP’s Pinterest boards for interesting and inspiring content!
- With Christmas less than one week away, we just had to go with a holiday theme for our Infographic Pick of the Week. Take a stroll down Memory Lane with a look at the top toys from the past 50 years.
Note: The This Week in Publishing blog will be on hiatus for the holidays but will return on Jan. 10. In the meantime, all of us at TFP wish you the happiest of holidays and all the best in 2014!
