USPS’s Rate Increase, Launch of Re/code and WSJ.D Sites, Marissa Mayer’s CES Keynote, The New York Times’ Site Redesign, Adobe’s Free DPS v29 Webinar, TFP’s Media Metrics Roundup, TFP DPS Tip: Apple Push Notification Service, Our Infographic Pick of the Week
Welcome back to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world! This Week in Publishing has been on hiatus for the past two weeks, so this week we’ll catch you up on a couple of stories you might have missed, and take a look at what’s already under way in 2014.
- As feared by print magazine publishers and other media mailers, the U.S. Postal Service approved a postal rate hike on Dec. 24. An increase of almost 6% is scheduled to go into effect Jan. 26. “We will carefully review the PRC’s decision before deciding whether to appeal it in court,” MPA President Mary Berner said in a press release.
- Also over the break, Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg’s split from The Wall Street Journal was definitively executed with the Journal’s rollout of a new tech site called WSJ.D, and Swisher and Mossberg’s launch of their AllThingsD replacement, dubbed Re/code.
- In a keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer announced plans to launch a line of digital magazines, starting with Yahoo Food, as well as the introduction of the Yahoo News Digest mobile app. The company also unveiled its Yahoo Tech site/digital magazine at CES.
- The New York Times launched a major site redesign this week—its first since 2006—that makes it more mobile-device-friendly. It’s also more ad-friendly: The website now incorporates native advertising—a change that was perhaps inevitable if not desirable, based on reader reactions to stories about the ad policy from NPR and CNNMoney.
- Last month we provided a brief overview of the changes included in the first round of Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite v29 update, but Adobe is hosting an hour-long webinar on Monday, Jan. 13, that will provide more details and the opportunity to ask questions. Sign up for the free DPS v29 webinar on Adobe’s website.
- Visit TFP’s Media Metrics blog for a roundup of stats related to the publishing and media industries. This month’s selections cover a range of topics, including social media use, advertising, the tablet market, and print vs. digital.
- The Apple Push Notification Service allows Adobe DPS app developers and publishers to send notifications to their iOS apps, even if a customer is not currently using the app. Head over to TFP’s DPS Tips blog to learn how use the service to send a text alert notification and trigger a Newsstand/background download.
- How do you make your content stand out? Good storytelling is key, and our Infographic Pick of the Week offers tips on how to use effective online storytelling to reach your audience.
