Layoffs at Patch, The NFL’s Super Bowl App, The Verfication Handbook, Pacific Standard Progress Report, What’s New in InDesign CC 9.2, TFP DPS Tip: Article Metadata, Our Infographic Pick of the Week
Welcome to TFP’s roundup of media news for the last week of January! We’ve got stories on the layoffs at Patch, a Super Bowl XLVIII interactive app, new features in InDesign CC 9.2, and more.
- Hundreds of Patch employees have been laid off, less than two weeks after Hale Global bought a majority stake in AOL’s network of local news sites, Jim Romenesko reported on his blog. It’s great to see the words of encouragement and career support offered by others in the industry in the blog post’s comments section.
- Even if you’re not attending the Super Bowl in person this Sunday, you can buy a digital version of the NFL’s official game program, created with Adobe DPS. Available for $1.99 for iPad, Android, and Surface, the magazine app includes audio, videos, animation, a children’s game, and several other interactive features.
- The European Journalism Centre has released the Verification Handbook, aimed at helping journalists properly vet user-generated content such as images and videos during the chaos of a humanitarian crisis. The web-based version is available now, for free; PDF, Kindle, and print editions will be released Feb. 7.
- Columbia Journalism Review just profiled Pacific Standard magazine, calling it “the 6-year-old mag that just took the internet by storm.” TFP interviewed Pacific Standard Editor in Chief Maria Streshinsky a little over a year ago; you can still read that Q&A on our Women in Media blog.
- See the TFP blog for a roundup of the new and improved features included in Adobe’s recent InDesign CC 9.2 update, including enhanced hyperlink management and Typekit font integration.
- On TFP’s DPS Tips blog, learn more about article metadata, which provides descriptive information about an article in an Adobe Digital Publishing Suite app.
- Our Infographic Pick of the Week offers up some fascinating statistics culled from the past year. There’s some surprising info among them that could shift your perspective as you plan your social media strategy for the year ahead.
