Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup news and tips for media industry pros! This week’s installment includes stories on First Look Media, how Facebook’s News Feed algorithm affects content’s reach, a resource for data visualization aficionados, and more.
- First Look Media, a start-up led by eBay co-founder Pierre Omidyar, has launched a “digital magazine” called The Intercept that will initially focus on the NSA spying scandal. It’s the first in a planned series of single-topic online publications. The company’s business model will rely on online ad revenue and the profits from licensing unspecified technology to other digital publishers.
- Following the news that Comcast is buying Time Warner Cable (pending regulatory approval), Gigaom compiled “everything you need to know” about the proposed merger between the broadband providers. The deal, which involves Internet services and data transmission, could have significant repercussions for content providers.
- Facebook made changes to its News Feed algorithm back in December that affected which content site visitors get to see. The Atlantic revisited the changes this week and concluded that the News Feed reflects readers’ preferences—and “news isn’t one of them”—while Business Insider offered a Facebook insider’s account of what’s really going on.
- If you’re a data visualization practitioner or fan, you’ll want to check out a hefty tome by Sandra Rendgen that offers a fantastic collection of infographic inspiration. You can read graphic designer Mary Lester’s review of this resource on the TFP blog.
- TFP’s latest Women in Media post has hiring news from Rodale, Yahoo, Guggeneheim Media, Say Media, and several other top names in publishing, along with stories on gender issues in the industry.
- Adobe Digital Publishing Suite now supports streaming audio and video content directly within your app. You can learn about this new capability in the latest post on TFP’s DPS Tips blog.
- Our Infographic Pick of the Week highlights usage data on consumer content-sharing trends for top social media sites like LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook.
- TFP colleague Gail Woodard is looking for helping answering the question, “What do book publishers want?” If you’re in the industry, please take a moment to respond to her brief online survey. We’ll share the results with you once they’re in.
