The Status of Women in the U.S. Media, LinkedIn as a Publishing Platform, Forbes.com’s Site Hack, Facebook’s Big App Buy, Structured Content for Effective Workflows, TFP DPS Tip: Using HTML-Based Content, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of news and tips for media industry pros! This week we’re sharing stories about LinkedIn, Forbes.com, Facebook, effective content strategies, and more.
- The Women’s Media Center released its Status of Women in the U.S. Media 2014 report this week. Poynter reviewed the report and concluded that the situation continues to be disappointing, as women remain underrepresented across print, broadcast, and online platforms. You can download the full report as a PDF.
- What’s a “platisher”? According to a recent piece on Re/code, “It’s something in between a publisher and a platform”—in other words, organizations like Medium, Gawker, and, as of this week, LinkedIn, that let the public publish content on their sites. And traditional publishers, take note: LinkedIn doesn’t rely on ads for its revenue.
- Last Friday, the Syrian Electronic Army hacked into Forbes.com and stole email addresses and passwords, defaced webpages, and posted a fake story. Again, take note: Access was gained through a spear phishing campaign. As of Wednesday, the site’s blog platform was still offline.
- We just have to acknowledge the big news this week about Facebook’s acquisition of messaging app WhatsApp for a jaw-dropping $19 billion. Though not pervasive among U.S. mobile customers, the app has 450 million active users worldwide—a global user base that Facebook hopes will help it extend its reach.
- TFP’s series on the Effective Content Backbone continues, with a new post from Margot Knorr Mancini on content structure, what it means, why it’s important, and the implementation challenges. And don’t miss the related video from Margot’s presentation at the IDEAlliance eMedia21 New York event last week.
- On TFP’s DPS Tips blog this week, we point out an option you might not have considered: using articles that are HTML-based as a source for content for your Adobe Digital Publishing Suite app.
- Our Infographic Pick of the Week comes to us courtesy of Adobe and its 2014 Digital Trends Briefing. The infographic includes some key findings from the report and highlights the digital trends, challenges, and opportunities that content marketers should keep in mind as they set their priorities for the year ahead.
