Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of news and tips for media industry pros! This week we’re sharing stories about Flipboard, Newsweek, the future of news, the power of print, and more.
- Mobile news-reading app Flipboard announced on Wednesday that it is acquiring competing content-sharing app Zite from CNN. At the same time, Flipboard is partnering with the cable news network to create customized magazines based on CNN’s shows and content. The deal is reported to be worth $60 million.
- After a 14-month hiatus, Newsweek hit newsstands today, with a cover story on the elusive founder of Bitcoin and a hefty cover price of $7.99. Only 70,000 copies were printed, but a digital version is available as well (for less than $7.99). You can read Ken Doctor’s analysis of the magazine’s strategy on the Nieman Journalism Lab website.
- Venture capitalist and Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen shared his optimistic view of the future of the news business in a blog post that got some industry analysts talking, including Poynter’s Rick Edmonds, who argues that although Andreessen got some things right in his analysis, he got some key numbers wrong.
- Attention, DPS users! Adobe has opened up registration for a March 17 webinar, during which Digital Publishing Evangelist Colin Fleming will review the changes and new features included in the forthcoming Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Version 30 update. Visit Adobe’s website to sign up for the virtual event.
- Guest blogger Mary Lester enjoys reading digital content on her iPad, but it hasn’t eclipsed her love of the printed page, which continues to offer her inspiration as a graphic designer. Read her latest post to find out about one of her favorite print magazines and what makes the print reading experience irreplaceable.
- Adding, editing, and managing hyperlinks in your Adobe InDesign CC layouts is simpler than ever. Visit TFP’s InDesign Tips blog to learn more as we walk you step by step through the process of incorporating hyperlinks into your documents.
- Our Infographic Pick of the Week offers some advice on specific words to use in headlines, tweets, and Facebook posts that increase the odds that your content will be shared.
