FiveThirtyEight’s Relaunch, Analytics’ Editorial Influence, Apple iPad News, Adobe DPS v30 Feature Enhancements, DPS Tip: Using Apple’s Application Loader, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week
Welcome to This Week in Publishing, TFP’s weekly roundup of news and tips for media industry pros. This week we’re sharing stories about data-driven journalism, analytics’ effect on content creation, the iPad 2’s retirement, and more.
- Nate Silver’s data-driven journalism site FiveThirtyEight relaunched this week at its new home with ESPN. Media critics immediately weighed in, pointing to Silver’s disdain for opinion journalism as a weakness and a site design that is “shiny” but “lands like a dud,” and questioning whether there’s even a market for data-oriented journalism.
- Speaking of data, American Journalism Review is doing a series on analytics’ effect on how news is produced. Its first installment discusses the puzzle of determining which metrics matter most and their effect on editorial decisions, and the second explains why The Verge withholds pageview stats from its writers.
- Apple announced that it’s retiring the iPad 2 and re-introducing its fourth-generation iPad to its product lineup. The 9.7-in. iPad 4 with Retina display will match the 16GB Retina iPad Mini’s $399 price tag.
- Adobe rolled out Version 30 of its Digital Publishing Suite software last weekend. See the TFP blog for an overview of exciting new enhancements included in DPS v30, including custom information screens, redesigned text notifications, new navigation options, and more.
- When you’re creating an Adobe Digital Publishing Suite app for the iTunes store, the final step is to submit it to Apple. Visit TFP’s DPS Tips blog to learn how to upload an app to Apple’s Application Loader.
- See TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week to learn more about the history—and growth potential—of mobile ads.
