Welcome to This Week in Publishing, TFP’s weekly roundup of news and tips for media industry pros! This week we’re sharing stories about Slate’s new subscription offering, The New York Times‘ The Upshot, advice on building consistent practices and processes, and more.
- As Slate unveiled a new subscription offering this week, Digiday looked at how four premium membership models—Slate Plus, New York Times Premier, Ars Technica Premier, and National Journal Membership—stack up against one another, and what subscribers gain by signing up.
- The New York Times has launched The Upshot, a news website aimed at being “conversational without being dumbed down.” An article from The Guardian takes a closer look at the site and two other new members of the explainer journalism/data journalism contingent, Vox and FiveThirtyEight.
- Facebook has partnered with social media news service Storyful to launch a resource for journalists, called FB Newswire. The page was created to aggregate “newsworthy content shared publicly on Facebook … for journalists to use in their reporting.”
- Citing declines in advertising and an aging readership, Meredith Corp. announced that the 131-year-old Ladies’ Home Journal will cease monthly print publication. It will instead become a quarterly “special interest publication” available for a premium price on newsstands only.
- Ken Doctor has written an article for Nieman Journalism Lab that’s chock-full of data about where newspapers fit in the battle for America’s largest ad sector—digital.
- How do publishers build consistent practices and processes, especially when each group runs somewhat autonomously? In her latest post on the Effective Content Backbone, TFP’s Margot Knorr Mancini shares advice on activating a governance plan in order to reuse your content in as many forms as possible.
- Have you missed any of our recent DPS Tips? Not to worry—we’ve gathered them in a single post to help you get caught up on moving Adobe Digital Publishing Suite assets, creating text notifications, importing articles, and more.
- This week’s infographic pick on the major players in the content aggregation market includes an article that examines the tricky relationship between news aggregators and publishers.
