Time Inc.’s Spinoff, Medium’s Relaunch of Matter, Q&A With BuzzFeed’s Founder, State of News on Mobile, TFP’s Media Metrics for June, DPS Tip: Create Nav Buttons for Multi-state Objects, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week
Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of news and tips for media industry pros! We have a lot to share with you this week, including stories on Time Inc., Media Metrics, digital news trends, and more.
- After months of preparation, Time Inc.’s spinoff from Time Warner is finally complete. The turmoil is far from over, though, as the publisher of more than 95 magazines proceeds to cut another 25% in editorial spending and attempts to move beyond its tradition in print.
- Publishing platform/publisher/”platisher” Medium has relaunched Matter, a science and technology journalism start-up it acquired and then shut down last year. Matter has been reincarnated as “a new online magazine committed to telling deeply engaging stories with fun, feeling and impact.”
- Fusion’s Felix Salmon published a lengthy Q&A with BuzzFeed Founder Jonah Peretti on Medium’s Matter site, covering Peretti’s perspective on the media industry and much, much more. For those who don’t have time to read all 23,000 words, Gigaom and Nieman Labs have each created posts that sum up the conversation’s highlights.
- In a study published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, 37% of survey respondents said they access news on a smartphone at least once a week, and 20% said they access news mainly via mobile devices. However, only 11% of readers said they have paid for digital news in the past year. The full report is available online.
- Internet trends, audience data, digital advertising, iPad sales, journalism jobs, tech trends, and social sharing are among the topics covered in the June edition of TFP’s Media Metrics roundup. (You can sign up for our monthly Media Metrics newsletter, too.)
- In previous DPS Tip posts, we discussed creating and editing mutli-state objects, which are great additions to an Adobe Digital Publishing Suite app. This week, we explain the steps to create numbered buttons to navigate through a slideshow in a DPS app.
- Our Infographic Pick of the Week takes a look at various book distribution models and the related financial repercussions—particularly relevant given the ongoing battle between Amazon and Hachette over profit margins.
This Week in Publishing appears every Friday on the TFP blog. Every week we compile interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world and put together a wrap-up to help our readers stay up-to-date. Think we missed something great? Leave a comment below and let us know!
