Adobe and Samsung have partnered on a new magazine app service called Papergarden, which will feature only Adobe DPS-based digital magazines. DPS customers Condé Nast, Hearst, and National Geographic are among those that will be participating. Papergarden will be included in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S tablet, which will be available June 27.
- Amazon is venturing beyond Kindle tablets and e-readers with its own Android smartphone offering, the Fire. The Fire will be released July 25, with a starting price of $199 with a two-year contract with AT&T. Jeremy Greenfield at Forbes is wondering what an Amazon smartphone might mean for ebooks.
- Apple has reached a settlement in the class-action lawsuit 30 state attorneys general filed more than two years ago related to allegations of ebook price-fixing. The terms still require court approval and are contingent on whether Apple wins its appeal of an earlier ruling in which it was found guilty of conspiring with five ebook publishers on pricing.
- PBS MediaShift has an interesting two-part series on magazine publishing this week: Part 1 examines how publishers are incorporating multimedia like video and interactive web content into traditional print workflows; Part 2 looks at how they are using analytics data to refine their digital publishing strategies.
- If you missed Adobe’s Creative Cloud webcast announcing its biggest slate of product updates since 2012, you’ll want to read our recap of some of the Adobe CC 2014 highlights, which include new versions of all 14 of its desktop applications, two new hardware accessories for the iPad, three new mobile apps, and tighter integration with its cloud services.
- In lieu of our usual DPS Tip post, this week we have a recap of Adobe’s latest update to its Digital Publishing Suite, Version 31.
