New York Times Revenue Numbers, NYC’s Daily Tabloids, Minority Employment in Newsrooms, Young Twitter Journalists, Top 5 iPad Apps for Designing on the Go, DPS Tip: Patch Releases v31.1 and v31.2, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week
Welcome to TFP’s roundup of news and tips for media industry pros! This week, we’re sharing stories about revenue numbers at The New York Times, struggles at NYC’s daily news tabloids, minority employment in newsrooms, young Twitter journalists, and more.
- As analysts discussed the not-so-good Q2 revenue and digital subscriber numbers at The New York Times and what that might indicate for daily newspapers in general, the Columbia Journalism Review reported that the city’s tabloids are having an especially rough time making the digital transition. It said as the stuff of the sensational goes viral, newspapers like the Daily News and the New York Post face competition on a vastly bigger scale than with their traditional local market, among other challenges.
- While news organizations of every shape and size are making staffing cuts these days, there is one bright spot out there: minority employment in newsrooms was up in 2013. A Poynter report cites a new survey by the American Society of News Editors that found that minority employees made up just over 13 percent of newsroom staff last year, a percentage point higher than last year’s newsroom census.
- On the social media front, the American Journalism Review reported on five young journalists who have built impressive national and international followings on Twitter. It interviewed these Twitter stars to find out how they did it.
- There are a lot of iPad design tools out there, some more elegant than others. To help you sift through the options, TFP’s Mary Lester lists her five favorite iPad apps for designing on the go.
- In this week’s DPS Tip, we break down two Adobe Digital Publishing Suite v31 patch releases: v31.1 and v31.2. Check out all the new features and bug fixes in both releases.
- TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week looks at the growth of public Wi-Fi, where hotspots are most vulnerable, and what you can do to keep your devices safe from hackers and identity thieves.
