Amazon’s Twitch Acquisition, Facebook vs. ‘Click-Bait’ Headlines, CMS Market, Interview With The Atlantic‘s Bob Cohn, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week, DPS Tip: Adobe DPS v31 Patch Release v31.3, Adobe MAX 2014
Welcome to TFP’s roundup of news and tips for media industry pros! This week, we’re sharing stories about Amazon’s purchase of Twitch, Facebook’s push against “click-bait” headlines, the CMS market, The Atlantic‘s successes, Apple’s Sept. 9 event, and more.
- Amazon announced it paid nearly $1 billion to acquire Twitch, a video gaming site that has millions of visitors each month. In fact, after just three years in business, it’s the No. 1 live-streaming platform in the U.S., according to online video analytics site Qwilt. An article from Business Insider explains what Twitch is and why it’s so big.
- Sites using “click-bait” headlines may see less traffic from Facebook in the coming months, reported the Guardian. In an effort to weed out content that offers little more than tempting headlines, the social network is now measuring the time readers spend with stories they click on from the site and adjusting its news feed algorithm accordingly.
- For content management system providers, the future is all about competition, collaboration, customization, and consolidation, according to a report from NetNewsCheck. It said the CMS market has seen a wave of mergers and acquisitions, leaving a smaller pool of vendors vying for the business of cash-strapped publishers that in some cases are giving open-source systems and in-house development a try.
- Some good news on the print magazine front: The Atlantic is bucking trends among other industry stalwarts, increasing both newsstand sales and revenue from digital operations. In an interview on the Mr. Magazine site, Co-President and COO Bob Cohn shared his thoughts on the publisher’s success, noting that “it’s a combination of having a great brand and a great legacy…and then being willing to be nimble and entrepreneurial and experiment with that legacy.”
- Apple followers were happy to hear that the company confirmed it will be holding a press conference on Sept. 9, at which it is expected to unveil the latest iPhone and the much-talked-about iWatch. Stay tuned for more details.
- Who’s stealing ebooks, and who’s paying for them? What’s the future of digital rights management, and what does that mean for authors and publishers? For some insights on those questions, check out TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week from WhoIsHostingThis.com.
- Also see this week’s DPS Tip for all the details on the new features and bug fixes in Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite v31.3 patch release.
- And at the Adobe MAX 2014 conference, to be held in Los Angeles Oct. 4-8, TFP’s Margot Knorr Mancini will speak at a session called Implementation and Integration with Digital Publishing Suite.
