Mobile Advertising, New Ad Rate Model, Writers Against Amazon, MPA Metrics Change, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week, DPS Tip: DPS v32 Folio Limitation Workaround, MAX 2014
Welcome to TFP’s roundup of news and tips for media industry pros! This week, we’re sharing stories about mobile in the advertising industry, publishers ditching the click, writers joining to protest Amazon’s alleged monopoly tactics, new metrics for measuring the health of magazines, and more.
- Advertising Week ran an interesting series of stories focused on mobile’s impact in the marketing and advertising industry—now and in the future. Topics included challenges to mobile’s growth and its potential to rule the ad world, as well as smartphones vs. desktops and whether tablets are truly “mobile.”
- In other ad industry news, an Ad Age headline asked, “Is Digital Advertising Ready to Ditch the Click?” Answer: It’s a good possibility. Leading the way, the report said, is London-based Financial Times, which next month will start basing its ad rates on “attention metrics”—the number of hours ads appear in front of targeted groups of readers—rather than on impressions.
- Update on Hachette vs. Amazon: A group of distinguished authors are uniting with other writers who have come out against Amazon in its e-book pricing dispute with Hachette, calling for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the online retail giant for monopoly practices, according to a New York Times report. Along with the Times, a number of other news outlets reported on arguments in favor of intervention, noting that Amazon declined to be interviewed for their stories.
- Mary Berner, head of the Association of Magazine Media (MPA), explained in an interview with Women’s Wear Daily the new metrics the organization will begin using in its monthly report on the health of the magazine industry. The problem with traditional measurements like monthly ad-page numbers and circulation is that those numbers are geared toward print only, she said. Under the new model, the MPA will instead look at consumer demand, using its new in-house measurement, called MPA360.
- This week’s infographic pick from the National Association of Women Business Owners and Web.com highlights results from the 2014 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, which found that respondents face some challenges but are optimistic about the performance of their businesses and the economy overall this year.
- In Adobe Digital Publishing Suite v32, there’s a limit of 1,000 folios per account in the Folio Producer Server, and exceeding that limit results in performance problems. See this week’s DPS Tip for a workaround.
- The Adobe MAX 2014 conference is kicking off in Los Angeles this weekend! Make sure to catch TFP’s Margot Knorr Mancini speaking at a session called Implementation and Integration with Digital Publishing Suite.
