Direct-to-Social Publishing, Facebook’s Mobile Bid, HBR’s Social Media Numbers, Atlantic-PBS NewsHour Series, 5 Steps for Planning a Sustainable Digital Magazine App, TFP’s Infographic Pick of the Week, DPS Tip: Adobe DPS v32 Update Release v32.2
Welcome to TFP’s roundup of news and tips for media industry pros! This week, we’re sharing stories about the advantages and pitfalls of direct-to-social publishing, Facebook’s mobile revenue-sharing bid, Harvard Business Review‘s impressive social media stats, the new Atlantic-PBS NewsHour series, and more.
- As the volume of content being consumed via social media skyrockets, a big question looming for publishers is whether they should post directly to those platforms—and accept the loss of control that entails. An article from Digiday looked at the good and the bad of the direct-to-social model and publishers who are taking the plunge.
- On the same subject, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg (right) began reaching out to media outlets with a revenue-sharing plan whereby publishers post their content directly to the social site’s mobile app, which, according to Business Insider, is opened by 654 million users every day. Hard to ignore, but publishers remain wary, reports said. As David Carr noted in The New York Times, “Media companies would essentially be serfs in a kingdom that Facebook owns.”
- Another Digiday report looked at how Harvard Business Review, a niche publication with a relatively small online audience, is outpacing its bigger rivals—including Forbes—on social media. Among the factors contributing to its success: a sharp focus on social media shares, a highly controlled network of expert contributors, use of quality evergreen content, and less reliance on ads for revenue.
- In other news, The Atlantic and PBS NewsHour embarked on a unique partnership under which TV segments of the magazine’s cover and feature stories will be broadcast on NewsHour and run on PBS.org/NewsHour and TheAtlantic.com. NetNewsCheck reported on this week’s series premier, which is based on a story in November’s technology issue.
- As the publishing landscape continues to shift, good planning and constant re-evaluation are key, says TFP’s Margot Knorr Mancini. Check out her latest blog for five essential steps in planning a sustainable digital magazine app.
- Many content marketers are finding themselves stretched in the race to engage their audiences. To find out how today’s “brand newsrooms” are dealing with their growing pains, check out our Infographic Pick of the Week.
- Also on the TFP blog, this week’s DPS Tip lists all the bug fixes in the v32.2 release of Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.
