AMMC 2017, Potential Acquisitions, Industry Hiring Moves, Tech Content Tips, InDesign CC Tip: Sharing CC Libraries
Welcome to Technology for Publishing’s roundup of news, stories of interest, and tips for media industry pros! This week, we’re sharing posts about the American Magazine Media Conference, potential acquisitions, a move for Janice Min and Rebecca Blumenstein, how to write great tech content, and more.
- Leaders from across the industry, as well as TFP CEO Margot Knorr Mancini, attended this year’s American Magazine Media Conference in New York to discuss trends, challenges, opportunities, and more. Among a range of topics, executives focused on factors affecting growth, the delicate balance between editorial and advertising, fake news, and subscription strategies. And out on the conference floor, some attendees opened up about what they are really seeing out on the front lines. The ASME awards were announced as well, with Mother Jones bringing home an Ellie for Magazine of the Year. See our article summarizing the day, and be sure to check out the AMMC 2017 image gallery.
- In other industry news, Meredith is continuing its pursuit of Time Inc., according to The Wall Street Journal, Fox Business, and others. Reports say the publisher and an investor group have signed nondisclosure agreements and are meeting with Time Inc. executives to go over company data, moving the potential sale one step closer to reality. Meanwhile, CNNMoney says talks between Condé Nast and Eldridge Industries, owner of The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard magazines, may be alive and well too, even though back in December negotiations reportedly came to a halt over the asking price for the magazines.
- That news came with the announcement that turnaround extraordinaire Janice Min will be leaving the top editor position at The Hollywood Reporter and sister pub Billboard to take on a new media investment role with parent Eldridge Industries, which could signal she would help facilitate a deal with Condé Nast. Matthew Belloni will step in as editorial director of the magazines, heading up all online, video, print, television, and events operations. Another industry move of note: The New York Times announced Wall Street Journal deputy EIC Rebecca Blumenstein is joining its top ranks as deputy managing editor. According to the Times, the appointment will make Blumenstein “one of the highest ranking women in the newsroom,” which over the past several months has seen the departure of female leaders like deputy executive editor Susan Chira and associate masthead editor Lydia Polgreen.
- When it comes to creating tech content that readers can connect with, you’ve gotta have heart, according to a blog post by IDG Enterprise Marketing. While facts and figures matter, it points out, you can’t get someone to engage unless they feel something—which isn’t always easy to do when you’re talking about, say, cloud solutions or the like. Check out these 5 tips on how to weave storytelling and emotion into your technical content—and a shout-out to Stephanie Brockway, formerly TFP’s creative director and now a member of the IDG Enterprise Marketing team. Send along any tips on how to make great content and we’ll share those too!
