Adobe announced the release of InDesign CC 2017.1 today. Although it may be quite underwhelming to those users who wait patiently for exciting new features that often come with new versions of InDesign, several “improvements” have been made. Here is a quick overview of what you can expect to see.
Redesigned New Document Dialog
It appears that the main focus of this updated dialog is to make the dialog consistent with Illustrator and Photoshop, and to make prefab templates readily available. When creating a new document, you have the option to choose the Print, Web, or Mobile tab at the top of the dialog and then select an Adobe Stock template from the samples shown, or search for other templates on Adobe Stock.com. Templates can be downloaded and further customized for your needs. Additionally, the Intent drop-down menu and the Preview checkbox have been removed, and an option to set the measurement system for your document has been added.
As a footnote to the introduction of this redesigned dialog, there is a new option in General Preferences for users who prefer the “old” New Document dialog
Updated User Interface
InDesign now has a new user interface that is “flat, modern, and easy on the eyes” and again brings more consistency with the UI of other Adobe apps. Every button, tool, and panel has been redesigned, and the interface now has four color options to choose from: Dark, Medium Dark, Medium Light, and Light. Adobe has changed the look of the interface again with the intent of delivering an “optimal user experience.”
Bug Fixes and Improvements
This release also contains multiple important bug fixes aimed at increasing performance stability.
