If your documents use numerous cross-references then this tip is great news for you. With the release of InDesign CC 2018 version 13.1, creating a cross-reference no longer requires selecting a paragraph style, for instance a chapter head, and then scrolling through a long list of paragraphs with the chapter head style applied. Now you can use the search field, added to the Cross-References panel, to quickly find a particular paragraph to cross reference. Just select the paragraph style and then start typing the paragraph text in the field and it will continually filter down the possible matches as more letters are added.

Click the triangle next to the magnifying glass to reveal options for where in the text the search will look.

Search types include:

  • Search From Start Match the search string from the beginning of the paragraph.
  • Search Anywhere Match the search string from anywhere in the paragraph.

Adding cross references is a great way to enhance your documents and it’s now easier than ever to add them!
