TFP’s Women in Media blog has been up and running for several months now, with more recent buzz really accentuating how high-profile women are making their mark. In just the past week, several announcements have shined a spotlight on female leaders in the media and publishing industries. We provide some brief highlights below:

  • Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg has a new book out this week, titled Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. In an interview with NPR, she discussed persistent gender gaps and the cultural challenges women continue to grapple with.
  • Coincidentally (or perhaps not), Sandberg was the guest editor for the inaugural edition of Cosmo Careers, a pullout supplement in the April issue of Cosmopolitan.
  • In a column titled “Writing About Powerful Women,” Columbia Journalism Review‘s Jennifer Vanasco asks, “Why do we in the media try to make some women standard bearers for all women?” and makes a case that “not everything every woman does”—including high-profile women like Sheryl Sandberg and Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer—”is a social statement.”
  • As part of its celebration of International Women’s Day, Accenture released a study “that provides insight into the way women define success and the initiatives that help them achieve it.” You can download the full report from Accenture’s website.
  • Anna Wintour has added Artistic Director of Condé Nast to her title. In addition to filling the newly created role, she’ll remain Editor in Chief of Vogue—a position she has held for nearly 25 years—and Editorial Director of Teen Vogue.
