Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re discussing Pew’s latest State of the News Media report, the choice between mobile apps and mobile websites, recent upheavals in the media industry, and more.

  • Pew’s just-released annual State of the News Media report reveals “a news industry that is more undermanned and unprepared to uncover stories, dig deep into emerging ones or to question information put into its hands.” See the PBS Media Usage blog for five key takeaways from the report.
  • According to a Compuware report, most smartphone and tablet users prefer mobile apps over websites specifically designed for mobile devices. Of the 3,500 global users surveyed, 85% favor mobile apps because they are “more convenient, faster and easier to navigate” than mobile websites.
  • The Alliance for Audited Media announced a mandatory reporting requirement starting in July for magazines with circulations greater than 250,000. The approximately 240 publications affected will have to provide sales data to the AAM by the end of the month following each issue or face sanctions.
  • Find out how other publishers are successfully using Pinterest, as well as advice on how to make the most of the social media tool, in our monthly Pinterest news roundup.
  • Visit TFP’s DPS Tips blog for helpful tips, including our latest post, on designing Adobe DPS apps that will work on standard- and high-definition versions of the iPad.
  • On TFP’s Women in Media blog, we take a look at some of the changes that have occurred in the publishing and media industry in recent months and how they’ve affected the women who have made it to the highest levels of organizational leadership.
