Welcome to TFP’s weekly roundup of interesting and noteworthy stories from the publishing world. This week, we’re looking at the latest tablet announcements, the MPA’s annual conference, one editor’s take on the state of the newspaper industry, and more.
- Apple’s announcements at an event on Tuesday included the introduction of the iPad Air—its thinnest, lightest tablet yet—and a Retina display for the iPad Mini. Ars Technica put together two tablet comparison charts to help you evaluate the features of the new iPad models and their competitors.
- Meanwhile, Microsoft and Nokia held their own product events Tuesday, to much less fanfare. Microsoft held a midnight launch event in 10 U.S. cities to preview its new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets, and Nokia announced its first tablet plus two “phablets”—smartphones with 6-inch screens.
- A new report from the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project helps explain some of the hype surrounding tablet news: 35% of Americans over age 16 own tablets, and 24% own e-readers, bringing the overall percentage of people who own such devices to 43%.
- This week’s annual MPA American Magazine Media Conference included an encouraging keynote by MPA President Mary Berner and panels discussing topics such as publisher revenue strategies. Visit the MPA’s website for additional event news.
- Editor Leah Lamson has spent almost her entire career with the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, a daily newspaper serving Massachusetts’ second-largest city. TFP’s Margot Knorr Mancini spoke with Lamson, who shared her perspective on the paper’s history, where the industry is heading, and opportunities for growth.
- Each month, we bring you a digest of the Pinterest coverage that’s relevant to the publishing and media industries. Our October Pinterest roundup includes stories on what the new article-pins feature means for publishers, the introduction of ads on Pinterest, and more.
- This week on TFP’s InDesign Tips blog, guest blogger Mary Lester shares a handy InDesign shortcuts poster from the Society of Publication Design.
- Every Wednesday, we post our Infographic Pick of the Week. This week’s graphic on the factors that contribute to your SEO rankings offers info and tips to keep in mind if you want potential readers to find your content.
