A new reality 

Voice-activated digital assistant products like Amazon Echo and Google Home are sure to be hot holiday gifts this year as more and more consumers warm to the idea of interacting with artificial intelligence-based apps instead of humans. And use of these apps is expected to only increase, with the number of digital assistants projected to hit 7.5 billion by 2021, according to this week’s infographic pick from Accenture Interactive.

For publishers, marketers, and brands, that means a whole new approach to audience engagement: “As this new channel rapidly expands, brands have to adapt to an environment where they have even less control,” explains Accenture’s Mark Kiernan. “Brands have to intuitively adapt to time, place, and situation to ensure they are creating value-added, nonintrusive experiences.”
